I Just Might Lose Everything

Naked I came into this world and naked I shall return.

Job – the Bible guy who actually lost everything – said that.
I think he was stoic in the face of it, but honestly, I don’t know if he handled it well.

It’s curious, isn’t it? How we develop these deep attachments over the course of our lives – when, in truth, we entered this world knowing nothing, knowing no one. Yet the thought of losing these things that were once foreign to us absolutely terrifies us.

What if I lose the house?
What if I lose my money?
My job?

I’m not trying to make light of any of it – of course I understand why it’s scary.

The loss of possessions often feels like a shortcut to homelessness, poverty, and helplessness. I get it. I really do.

Why are you afraid of homelessness?

Somewhere in that fear might be an answer that could spark real change.

Why are you afraid of losing your money?

What are you spending it on?

Is it time to refocus?

It’s so easy to fool ourselves into believing that what we have today – the structures, the comforts, the relationships – will always be there.

But that is the farthest thing from the truth.

We are always living beside, always living in close proximity to, the opposite of what we have.

And the more conscious we are of that reality, the less likely we are to take the present moment for granted.

So, what if you lose everything?

Then what?

Go ahead – sit with it and let me know.
What would actually happen?
How might you respond?

Are there gaps in the system, gaps in your skillset, your mindset, your community, that you need to address now to prepare you for that possibility?

You are more resilient than you think, more capable than you think, but those parts of you could lie dormant unless challenged. Instead of hiding from loss, it behooves us to confront it. So that when or if it challenges us to a duel we are ready.
