On Love, for My Son

Hi Little One,

I suppose now is the time
to tell you about love.

First,
you must love naïvely,
and you must love deeply.

Allow yourself to feel the butterflies.
Allow yourself to be giddy.
Allow your heart to skip a beat.
Allow yourself to think about them
in between the sentences
and paragraphs of your day.

Second,
you must love wisely—
and you must do this simultaneously
with your naïveté.

When you feel the butterflies,
you will think, Ahh, so these are the butterflies. Interesting.

When you get giddy,
you might think, Oh, what’s this?

In the midst of these emotions,
approach them with wisdom.

Know that giving your heart
means exposing yourself to hurt.
It means exposing yourself to betrayal.

And that, my son,
is okay.

That, my son,
is love.

Love is courageous;
it doesn’t create a barrier around itself
trying to be safe.

Love is vulnerable;
it shows up again and again.

And as your father would say—
Love is present.
It doesn’t hide behind ego.
It seeks you out.

Yes, my son,
that ache in your chest is heartbreak.
It means you’ve done it right.

Now, my son,
take the lessons of this heartbreak
and run full speed ahead
in your next love affair—

wisely and naïvely.
