Why does the fish thrash so?
Does it know?
Flexing its spine,
swimming as hard as it can
in the opposite direction —
screaming,
on a frequency we can’t hear.
Why is it fighting back?
Why not come willingly?
It wants to live?
Preposterous.
If it wanted to live,
it would form organized society,
pass laws,
demand rights.
Until then,
I’ll reel it in —
and make a sport of the thing.
